Online bullying and harassment is a huge concern nowadays. People are able to get away with heinous comments due to anonymity. Users feel more comfortable typing out about insults than saying it directly to their faces. Websites have rules but they are not enforced. Sites such as YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok are infamous for low agency, or moderation. Bullying can escalate into harassment if the user(s) is/are constantly targeting a specific person or group of people. There are many reasons that bullying happens and it is never justified. Common targets for bullies include the disabled, plus sized people, POC, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those who do not fit unrealistic beauty standards. Several comments containing slurs or hateful remarks go under the radar. On low moderation sites, hate speech is normalized. The consequences of cyberbullying can leak offline. When faced with hate speech, trolls. and bullies online, the targets will be left with low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, depression, body dysmorphia, and even internalized feelings. Cyberbulying and harassment can become doxxing, in which someone leaks personal or sensitive information about an individual and blackmails them. Certain acts online are illegal and can get you arrested. It all needs to be addressed responsibly.
